Migrate PLA 3.0 to another system

Find details on how to migrate PLA 3.0 to another system, such as a different computer or server, for example when retiring an older system.

Note:
For details on how to migrate from a PLA 2.x environment, see the Update from PLA versions 2.x topic.

Before you begin

We recommend creating a current backup of your system and database before you begin. For details, see the Backup and restore topic.

About this task

This task guides you through the process of migrating PLA 3.0 to another system. The migration includes several components that you need to transfer in order: software, license, application data, database, and add-ons. The following figure provides an overview of these steps. For details, see the respective subtopic.
Five-step process with icons: software (install desktop icon), license, application data (folder icon), database, and add-on (puzzle piece icon), numbered 1 to 5 to indicate a sequence of steps.

Procedure

To migrate the software:
  1. Download and install PLA 3.0 in the target system.
    1. Download the setup files for the PLA 3.0 version you are using.

Use a computer with internet connection to download the required setup files and distribute them in your environment, according to your deployment scenario. For details on the steps, see the Download the setup files topic.

    2. Install PLA 3.0.

Install the PLA 3.0 software in your environment according to your deployment scenario. For details on the steps, see the Install the PLA 3.0 software topic.

To migrate your license:
  1. Activate your PLA 3.0 license. Complete the steps that correspond to your licensing option.
    • Concurrent use license: The PLA 3.0 installation on your new system should automatically detect your license. If not, you have to manually make sure that your system can connect to the license server distributing your license. For details, see the Licenses on a Sentinel license server topic.
    • Seat license: PLA 3.0 licenses are tied to the computer on which you activated them. You need to transfer the license in cases such as reinstalling or renaming the computer, or when retiring it and activating the license on a different system. For details, see the Transfer your license topic.
To migrate your application data:
  1. Restore the backed up application data:
    • Configuration profiles of Data Acquisition Modules
    • Database connection profiles
    • Add-on repository
To migrate your databases:
  1. Restore your database and connections:
    Note:
If the location of the database or the login credentials have changed, you need to adapt the existing connection profiles or create new ones. For details, see the Database connection profiles topic.
    • SQLite database:
      1. Copy the *.s3db database file from the backup medium into the folder %ProgramData%\Stegmann Systems\PLA 3.0\Databases. If you are unable to locate the files, you may not use the default file paths listed in the File paths topic. In this case, contact your system administrator.

      2. Use the restored database connection profile to connect to the copied database.

    • Microsoft SQL Server database:
      1. Use the tools provided by Microsoft to restore your SQL Server database.

      2. Use the restored database connection profile to connect to the copied database.

To migrate your add-ons:
  1. Activate the PLA 3.0 add-on versions you are using. For details, see the Activate add-ons topic.
    Note:
Offline environment installations require extra steps before you can activate your add-ons. For details, see Offline environment installation in the Installation options topic.
